Q: What is Naxos Music Library?
A: Naxos Music Library is the most comprehensive collection of classical music available online. It includes the complete Naxos and Marco Polo catalogues of over 165,000† tracks, including Classical music, Jazz, World, Folk and Chinese music * . Whilst listening, you can read notes on the works being played as well as biographical information on composers or artists in Naxos's extensive database. All these can be accessible from computers in academic libraries, home or office. Naxos Music Library and all of its contents are owned by Naxos Digital Services Ltd., part of the Hong Kong-based Naxos Group of Companies.

Q: What are the key features and benefits?
A: Naxos Music Library is an unique resource, giving you online access to the entire Naxos and Marco Polo catalogues of recordings * . Through a sophisticated online search engine, you can select works by composer, artist, period, year of composition, instrument or genre. Playlists can also be easily created for educational use, or for hours of continuous enjoyment. Whilst listening, you can read insightful information about the works, artists and composers. Naxos's new releases (currently around 200 CDs per year) are continually added to ensure that the music library is always complete and up-to-date.

Q: What are the main benefits for academic institutions?
A: Naxos Music Library is an excellent tool in musical education at any level. It gives teachers the opportunity to plan course work and assignments around a much wider collection of material than is usually available in conventional libraries. Playlists can be created. Students will have access to the playlist recordings, on or off campus. Multiple users can listen to the same tracks at the same time. In the classroom, teachers can choose from a great selection of music to play without having to find or purchase CDs.

A: Yes, Naxos Music Library is available for use now, all over the world.

A: Naxos Music Library is available at all times, round the clock.

Q: Can I access it at home or from any computer?
A: As a standard registered subscriber, you can access Naxos Music Library with a password, from any audio-enabled computer with an Internet connection, and the software requirements specified below. However, if your institution requests IP-authenticated access, then you will need access to the intranet of your institution.

Q: How is it priced?
A: Naxos has built its reputation on providing affordable access to fine music. Naxos Music Library is a continuation of the same concept. You decide how many users you wish to have access to the service (minimum five). The more user counts you subscribe, the cheaper the charge will be on average.

Q: Are there titles on Naxos Music Library that you cannot buy on CD?
A: Yes, hundreds. The entire Naxos catalogue *  is available on Naxos Music Library before CDs are released and after they are deleted from the CD catalogue.

Q: Who pays the collection societies for the use of the musical works?
A: Naxos does. We have agreements with the Hong Kong collection society CASH and with ASCAP for the ASCAP repertoire. Subscribers to Naxos Music Library do not have the right to publicly perform the contents, eg. in cafeterias, or other public spaces.

Q: Do we need any licences or agreements to play the music in classrooms?
A: The Fair Use Policy of your organisation/institution or local performing rights societies will govern how you can use content that is in copyright.

Q: Can I have a free trial subscription?
A: Yes, if you are active in music education or if you are a music industry professional, such as a musician, a journalist, or an executive or staff member of a performing arts organisation, we are happy to offer you a free trial.

Q: How does Naxos Music Library work?
A: Naxos Music Library is streamed to you or your institution/library, via the Internet, directly from our servers in Hong Kong. A sophisticated search engine enables you to select and listen to the music (individual tracks or whole CDs) through your computers, using either headphones or speakers.

Q: What are the hardware and software requirements?

MS Windows 98SE, 2000, XP with MS IE 6.0 / Mozilla 1.7.1 / FireFox 1 / Netscape 7.1 and Media Player 9 / 10
Browser Settings: Privacy = Medium, ActiveX controls = Enable, Cookies = Accept, Pop-up Blocker = Off, Sound Scheme = No Sound.

Apple user:

Mac OS X 10.4.7 with Safari / FireFox and Media Player 9 or later (Setting: Open using Rosetta); or
Mac OS X 10.4.3 with MS IE 5.2 / Mozilla 1.7.12 / Netscape 7.2 / Safari 2.0.2 and Media Player 9.0 ; or

Your computer's Internet connection will determine the streaming rate you can choose. A higher Internet bandwidth means you can choose a better sound quality. The minimum requirements are:

Broadband for 128Kbps streaming (CD quality)
DSL or ISDN for 64Kbps streaming (near CD quality)
Dial-up connection for 20Kbps streaming (FM quality)

Q: In what format is the music streamed?
A: The music is streamed in Microsoft WMA 9.0 format, at 128Kbps, 64Kbps or 20Kbps, depending on the type of Internet connection used.

Q: How is the sound quality compared to a CD?
A: The standard streaming rate of 64Kbps produces near-CD quality. If you have a broadband Internet connection, you can choose 128Kbps for a quality equivalent to CD. If you have a dial-up Internet connection, the music is streamed at 20Kbps, which is equivalent to FM sound quality. Of course, the sound quality is also dependent upon the type of speakers or headphones used.

Q: Can I set the default search page and streaming rate?
A: Yes, through the My Account page. You can select which search page (Standard or Advanced) you prefer to have as your default when you log on; and at which speed you would like the music to stream (20Kbps, 64Kbps or 128Kbps).

Q: How do I log in?
A: There are two options.
1. Start up the browser, go to www.naxosmusiclibrary.com, type in your username and password, and click the Login button. The procedure is the same for logging in at home, in the library or at the office.
2. For educational institutions, you may go to a different web site. See IP-authentication below.

Q: What is IP-authentication?
A: IP-authentication is a feature for campus use of Naxos Music Library at academic institutions. A dedicated URL can be created for your institution. You will then be able to access Naxos Music Library without additional login, as long as you have the rights to use your institution's computer resources. You are authenticated via the verification of your IP address, which tells us if you are within the premise of the institution.

Q: How many simultaneous users can access the library?
A: There is no limit to the number of simultaneous users you may have. You decide how many subscriptions you wish to purchase. We recommend one subscription per user or workstation.

Q: Is it possible to download the music or burn it to CD?
A: No. It is not possible to download or burn to CD any music on Naxos Music Library. You can easily gain online access to the catalogue number of the disc you need, and purchase it at your local record store, or order it through our online retailers which you can find on the Distributors page on www.naxos.com.

Q: How reliable is the service?
A: Since Naxos Music Library's content is streamed through the Internet, the quality of the service is dependent upon the quality of service provided by your local Internet Service Provider. Naxos makes every possible effort to ensure that its servers have sufficient capacity and adequate rate of connectivity to provide each customer with a quality of service comparable to current standards in the industry in the customer's locale. Maintenance is performed at times of low usage and will be announced in advance.

A: Naxos Digital Services offers ongoing email support. Email us with an enquiry and we will respond within one working day if you are in the Far East or the USA; and within two working days for other locations.

Q: How can I get my usage statistics?
A: Usage statistics are available only for institutional subscribers. After logging in using your administrator or librarian user id, go to the "My Account" page and then click on the "Usage Stat" link to access your usage statistics. The "My Account" link is located near the top right hand corner of every page. Please note all references to date and time are based on GMT +8 (Hong Kong time).

Q: We recently purchased new computers at our school and they cannot access the Naxos Music Library through the link that we normally use. How do we fix this?
A: When you add new computers to your network, please make sure that you update their settings based on the NML technical specifications. Also, please re-send your list of IP ranges to NML staff (see relevant email address at the bottom of this page) so that we can update your IP addresses.

Q: How do I create a Playlist?
A: Click on "Playlist", situated along the bar at the top, and you will find a list of instructions near the bottom. Please note: students of an institution cannot create playlists.

Q: I am a professor and I would like to view static URLs. How can I do this?
A: Viewing Static URLs to CD pages
Using your professor log-in (you can contact your librarian for this information), you can select the "Static URL to Cat. No." button, located at the bottom of the Browse / Search page, to view the static URLs to complete CDs.

Viewing Static URLs to Playlists
Using your professor log-in, you can select the "Static URL to Playlist" tab, located at the bottom of the Playlists page, to view the static URL to any complete playlist.

Viewing Static URLs to Repertoire
Using your professor log-in, you can go to the Advanced Search page to look for a particular CD. Once you have entered the search criteria, click "Search". At the results page, click the "Static URL to Repertoire" button to view the static URL for each single piece of music.

Viewing Static URLs to Tracks
Using your professor log-in, select a CD that you would like to view, and click the CD link. When the CD page opens, click the "View Static URLs" button. This will reveal a list of static URLs for all of the tracks on the CD.

Q: Once I have finished using the service, can I exit by just going to another website?
A: No. When a user logs into the Naxos Music Library and then, after using the service, fails to log-out properly, this eats up a user space on a subscription, and each subscription has a maximum number of user space. A user space will be released after a time-out period is reached. The time-out period is different for different types of subscriptions. In the case of an institution, it is set by the administrator; in the case of Korean online individual subscribers, it is four hours; and it is eight hours for all other online individual subscribers. Please ask all users to log out using the following process: Click the red "Log-out" button at the top of the "Browse / Search" page. Then, close the browser.

Q: Can I use Naxos Music Library in a language other than English?
A: If you log in with the administrator username and password on behalf of an institution, into Naxos Music Library, you will see the "Language" parameter in "My Account". This parameter allows some web pages or part of a web page to be displayed in the chosen language, such as traditional Chinese. Note, however, functions cannot be done in the chosen language if the chosen language is not English, only display of some pages will be in the chosen language. For instance, functions such as advanced search, text search and playlist creation/modification still need to be done in English.

Q: I am using Naxos Music Library via a Naxos subscription with my institution. Why does it ask me for the username and password when I go to Naxos Music Library from my browser favorite?
A: It is because our URL is saved with "default.asp" at the end when you save it as your browser favorite. Please remove "default.asp" at the end when you go to Naxos Music Library using your saved favorite. You will then not be asked for the username and password.

Q: Why am I getting the message "You are not authorized to view this page"?
A: This message means that you are entering from an Internet location whose address is not included in your institution"s list of valid IP (Internet Protocol) addresses. Please go to www.ipchicken.com. When you arrive at the website, a number will appear. Please email this number to customer.service@naxos.com, along with the name of your institution.

Q: Why am I getting the message "The maximum number of simultaneous connections of your subscription has been reached......"?
A: This message appears because your subscription allows a certain number of users to be logged in at one time. Ensure that you do not have more Naxos Music Library sessions open than you subscribe to. Always remember to click the RED log-out button near the top right corner of the screen when you are finished using Naxos Music Library to ensure that you clear your connection. Closing the browser or going to another site without clicking the log-out button will keep your user space occupied and can sometimes prevent you or other users from logging in.

If you are using a subscription via an institution, other patrons from your institution may be using Naxos Music Library at the same time. If you receive the "maximum users" message often, please contact the relevant personnel of your institution and request an increase in the number of user spaces purchased. This will make it easier for all users to gain access as needed.

Q: What do I do if I get the message "Login Failed......"?
A: Please email Customer.Service@Naxos.com with the username/password given to you by Naxos, or send the name of the organization you belong to which subscribes Naxos Music Library. We will check your website or password to make sure that your connection is working properly.

Q: Why do I get the message "Sorry! Your license has expired."
A: It is likely that your subscription to Naxos Music Library has expired. If you access Naxos Music Library via a subscription from an institution, please contact the relevant personnel in the institution. If you think the message is in error, please email Customer.Service@Naxos.com with your Naxos username/password, or the Naxos URL given to you, or the steps you take to access Naxos Music Library. We will check your subscription.

Q: Why do I get the message "Invalid library card number" when I log on to Naxos Music Library?
A: This might be happening because there is a problem with the library card number that you entered. Please re-check the library card number you entered on the Naxos Music Library log-in page. If you still get the same message, please email Customer.Service@Naxos.com with the library card number you logged in with, and the address of the web page where you logged in.

Q: Why do I get the code "-1072885579"?
A: It could be due to problems with the connections to Naxos' database. If the problem persists, please email Customer.Service@Naxos.com the title and/or catalog number of the album, the track number, and the streaming quality (CD, Near CD, FM) with the problem.

Q: How do I make a copy of my screen and send it to Customer.Service@Naxos.com ?
A:

For Wins/XP:

(1) Press the PRINT SCREEN key near the top right of your keyboard when you have the window you want to capture active. You will not see anything happening until you do step (2) below.
(2) Open a new Microsoft/Word document, then press the PASTE key (under the EDIT tab).
(3) Save the Microsoft/Word document, and email it to Customer.Service@Naxos.com.

Q: I got the message "The Internet location you are entering from is not authorized to access the NML. Please contact Naxos for assistance......". What do I do?
A:

You could be coming from a computer with an IP address and/or a referral URL not listed as authorized. You need to give us your IP address and what steps you take to go to Naxos Music Library, as follow.

Please email us the IP address shown on the IP Chicken page and a snap shot of any error/message you see on the screen. If you do not see any message, a snap shot of your screen with Naxos Music Library will also help our troubleshooting. When emailing us, please also list the exact steps you take to go to Naxos Music Library. Here is an example:
1. From my home computer, I go to the intranet http://...... of my university and log in.
2. Click Classical Music, then click Naxos Music Library.
3. See the BROWSE/SEARCH page of Naxos Music Library.
4. Double click 8.551144, select track 1, click Play Selections. It says "Connecting to media" and then I get the error.
